UFC 297 Outcomes: Du Plessis and Pennington Take Home UFC Championships

In a thrilling battle at UFC 297 in Toronto's Scotiabank Arena, Dricus Du Plessis secured his place in history as the UFC's first champion from South Africa. The main event saw Du Plessis dethrone Sean Strickland in a bloody, back-and-forth contest that ended with a split decision (48-47, 47-48, 48-47) in favor of Du Plessis.

The fight could have swung either way, and upon hearing the scorecards, Du Plessis proudly called for the South African flag. Reflecting on the historic moment in his post-fight interview, he declared, "This is history."

Early in the bout, Strickland found success with a powerful jab that caused trouble for Du Plessis. The South African fighter acknowledged Strickland's jab as "super, super, super" good. However, in the fourth round, Du Plessis turned the tide by cutting Strickland near his left eye and landing a significant right hand. Despite Strickland's strong finish in the fifth round, Du Plessis showcased his championship mettle, dispelling doubts about his cardio.

With this victory, Du Plessis extended his winning streak to nine and maintained a flawless 7-0 record in the UFC. The 30-year-old fighter from Pretoria, a former two-division EFC champion and KSW champion, had previously secured a TKO win over former champion Robert Whittaker at UFC 290 in July.

Strickland, who won the middleweight title by defeating Adesanya at UFC 293 last September, saw his three-fight win streak come to an end. The California native, now residing and training in Las Vegas, has secured eight wins out of his last ten since moving up to the 185-pound division in 2020.

In the co-main event, Raquel Pennington emerged victorious over Mayra Bueno Silva, claiming the vacant UFC women's bantamweight title in the absence of longtime champion Amanda Nunes, who retired in June. Pennington, who battled through several submission attempts, secured a unanimous decision victory and expressed the challenges she overcame to reclaim the title.
