Friars Struggle with Shooting, Resulting in a 54-44 Loss Against Georgetown

In Washington, D.C., the Providence College women's basketball team faced a tough challenge against BIG EAST rival Georgetown on Feb. 10 at McDonough Arena. The Friars, led by Olvia Olsen's impressive performance with 16 points and eight rebounds, unfortunately couldn't secure a victory, falling 54-44. This defeat dropped the Friars to 11-14 overall (5-7 BIG EAST), while the Hoyas improved to 16-8 (6-7 BIG EAST).

In the opening quarter, Providence struggled, trailing by 10 points before Emily Archibald managed to score the Friars' first field goal with just 42 seconds left. Georgetown dominated the first quarter, leading 15-5 as the Friars had a tough time finding the basket, shooting only 1-7 from the floor, while Georgetown converted 6-19 attempts.

The second quarter saw a better effort from the Friars, outscoring Georgetown 15-9 and heading into halftime trailing 24-20. Olsen and Brynn Farrell combined to score all 15 points for Providence in the quarter.

Providence staged a comeback in the third quarter, taking a 30-26 lead with a 10-2 offensive spurt. Grace Efosa and Ugne Sirtautaite played pivotal roles in this surge. However, Georgetown regained the lead, finishing the quarter at 35-35 after Olsen's lay-in.

Georgetown took control in the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run, forcing a Providence timeout. The Hoyas extended the run to 10-0, ultimately securing a 46-39 lead with 4:40 left. Despite Olsen's efforts, the Friars only managed three points from the foul line in the final 1:25, and Georgetown sealed the game with a perfect 6-6 showing from the free-throw line in the last 34 seconds.

Olsen continued to shine for the Friars with 16 points, eight rebounds, one blocked shot, and a career-high five steals. Farrell and Efosa each contributed 10 points. Despite being the second-best three-point shooting team in the BIG EAST, Providence struggled from beyond the arc, finishing 0-14 for the first time this season.

On a positive note, the Friars outrebounded the Hoyas 42-36 but fell short in points off turnovers, with Georgetown holding a 14-9 edge. Providence committed 20 turnovers, while Georgetown turned the ball over 15 times.

Looking ahead, the Friars will return home to Alumni Hall to face Butler in BIG EAST Conference action on Wednesday, Feb. 14. The game serves as the backdrop for the program's annual Pink Out Friartown game, presented by RIMI, where fans are encouraged to wear pink to show support in the fight against cancer. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m
